Will Yoo Ah In Become the Next ‘Prince of Asia’?
Move over Jang Keun Suk! Yoo Ah In is being deemed as the newest hallyu icon, as his phone is ringing off the hook with calls to cast him in trendy dramas.
This year was undoubtably the year of Jang Keun Suk, as his ‘Prince of Asia’ syndrome swept through the world. Jang recently nailed the lead role in producer Yoon Suk Ho’s upcoming drama Love Rain, and plans to synergize his ‘hallyu power’ with another popular hallyu star, Girls’ Generation member Yoona.
Many drama officials used to concentrate on getting Jang to star in their dramas, but recently the tables have turned. As Yoo Ah In has become the no. 1 most wanted name on youth drama casting lists, he is becoming ever more popular among drama producers. The drama he’s currently considering is Fashion King. It was planned out by LK Producers, and tells the success story of a young man who starts a business from scratch in Dongdaemun Market, but in the end takes over the fashion world. This drama is not his only candidate, as he is also receiving other offers from traditional dramas and melodramas.
A drama official stated, “Because it’s been a long time since Jang Dong Gun, Song Seung Hun and Won Bin have starred in dramas, the age of stars which we can rely on for the hallyu star merit is dropping lower. Actors who are still fairly active, such as Jang Keun Suk, Lee Min Ho, Yoo Ah In and Park Yoo Chun, are proving to be more attractive. Yoo Ah In especially proved his power in Punch by drawing a 5 million audience. We believe he has potential to become a single lead actor.”
The payment for a contract with Yoo are expected to rise along with the rise in demand. Jang’s prices jumped up with the success of his drama You’re Beautiful, and now many agree that 100-200 million won per episode is well worth spending if he stars in their dramas. Once Yoo decides on his next piece, his net worth is also expected to jump more than threefold. Many are looking forward as to whether Yoo will be able to continue the Korean wave he started up with Sungkyunkwan Scandal in his next drama.
